Inspired by natural systems, Alief Childhood Center in Houston, Texas used the implementation of sustainable principles, ecological zones, and outdoor learning to create a model for future projects in the school district.

TBG designed two courtyards, each inspired by native Texas ecosystems – the beach (lowlands) and Big Bend (highlands), creating an opportunity for children to explore Texas without traveling while enhancing their mental boundaries. Natural prairie zones are also spread throughout the site along with piney forest pockets. The design creates the opportunity to take guided eco-walks outside of the classroom as well as learning opportunities such as sun dials, rain gages and native wildlife education.
