The Mile Zero Trailhead is a key landmark along Barton Creek at Zilker Park that facilitates functional wayfinding needs, provides areas for respite and celebrates the environment’s rich character. Observation decks with informational signage, shaded limestone seat walls and rustic gateways achieve the functional needs desired of the trailhead experience in a simple and naturalistic aesthetic.
The wayfinding strategy centers on the Mile Zero trailhead marker, establishing a clear starting point for the Violet Crown Trail while transforming the once-unassuming entry into a more legible and welcoming arrival point. A moon gate frames the trail entrance and helps guide visitors toward the trailhead from the surrounding area. Donor recognition is thoughtfully integrated throughout the installation, with names incorporated using the organization’s branding colors to celebrate the community support behind the site.
