14 years ago the City of Austin purchased a former Home Depot site located at I-35 and St. John Avenue. The City Council voted unanimously this past week to start negotiations to redevelop the land and begin construction as soon as next year.

TBG is working alongside real estate developers at Greystar and the Housing Authority of the City of Austin to design the highly requested mixed-use residential area. The 19-acre site will include:

– a 3-acre public park with a splash pad, playground, and community garden
– 280 affordable rental units
– 15,000 sq. ft. of community retail and support services for tenants such as grocers, vocational training centers, and child care

With gentrification forcing many Austin residents who possess longstanding roots out of their hometown, the St. John Redevelopment is hopeful their affordable housing, expanded park space, and commercial space will help combat this issue. Furthermore, residents are optimistic the commercial space will provide them with job opportunities and social services.
